Course Prerequisites and Plan Thresholds

Prerequisites for English Courses

Various prerequisites are described in the Faculty of Arts and Science Calendar, but two prerequisites are particularly significant to students in English:

1. For entrance into 200-level courses, a student requires:

  • ENGL 100/6.0.

2. For entrance into 300- and 400-level courses, a student requires:

  • enrolment in an ENGL BA (Hons.) Plan (Major or Medial), and
  • successful completion of ENGL 200/6.0 and ENGL 290/3.0.

Prerequisite 1 applies to anyone who wishes to take more than a first-year English course. Prerequisite 2 applies only to students who are enrolled in an ENGL Major or Medial Plan, since 300-level ENGL courses are not normally open to students who are enrolled in an ENGL Minor Plan.

As a general rule, you should keep your average in English at C+ or better to complete an honours degree successfully.

Prerequisites for ENGL 590/3.0

1. For entrance into ENGL 590/3.0, the Senior Essay, a student requires:

  • permission of the Undergraduate Chair, and
  • a minimum GPA of 3.50 or better in 24.0 previous English units.

Program Thresholds

The Program Thresholds for students registering in an English Plan are as follows:

  • Automatic Threshold: Any student who receives a grade of C or better in ENGL 100 is guaranteed admission into an English Major, Medial, or Minor Plan.
  • Pending Threshold: ENGL 100 is required to be eligible to register in an English Major, Medial, or Minor Plan.
  • Threshold for Elective Students: Students who do not wish to register in an English Plan but are interested in taking a 200-level English course as an elective must have completed ENGL 100 to gain access to most 200-level courses, where space permits.
