Research Interests

I am a professor of History and Global Development Studies. My research has focused primarily on issues of gender and sexuality in southern Africa but lately has shifted to concerns about social injustices arising from the climate crisis. I am particularly interested in supervising students who want to explore the complex legacies of colonialism and racial capitalism in Africa. My own recent work on the topic includes a social and political history of the management of impacts of environmental degradation in an urban setting, discussion of a community oral history project, and an analysis of new scholarship from southern Africa that seeks to reimagine urbanism and our future relationship with the changing climate.
