MSGP on line panel: The IHRA "Working" Definition of Anti-Semitism and the Academy

The panel will address the implications of the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. (IHRA) "working" definition in legislation, on social media, and in education for academic freedom. While bigotry against minorities, refugees and non-citizens which has triggered mass violence against Muslim, Sikh, and Jewish communities of North America is on the rise,  the IHRA working definition – a definition that according to IHRA committee member, Kenneth Stern, was never intended to be the basis of legislation – neither serves to enhance existing legal protections nor to improve the standing of Jews within Canadian society. Indeed, this redefinition of antisemitism, especially when taken together with its appended illustrations that conflate critique of Israel with anti-Jewish prejudice poses a direct threat to academic freedom and all those who teach and study the Middle East and advocate for human rights,
