EVENT PURPOSE: “Polishing the chain” (Wampum Belt) ensures that a relationship does not become rusty and is a reaffirmation of the commitment between Queen’s and Indigenous peoples as ongoing and not just a moment in time.

HISTORY: The friendship wampum belt was presented to Queen's University Senate by the Clan Mothers at Tyendinaga, and the Grandmothers' Council in Kingston, on March 7, 2017. This cherished symbol is now present at all Senate meetings, to represent the lasting covenant of peace and friendship.

Wampum = Peace, Friendship, and Good Minds

Note: Wampum are traditionally beads made from shells.  Belts made of wampum are used to mark agreements, contracts, and commitments between peoples and are of particular significance when associated with treaties or covenants between Aboriginal peoples and European colonial powers.
