My training and interests initially developed in the visual arts, and included both conceptual and post-conceptual art.  The concepts that I employ in film production and critique still draw importantly from those sources.  I taught in the Art School at the California Institute of the Arts from 1987-2000, after which I joined the Film Department faculty in a role designed in part to account for the contact zone between the visual arts and film/media.
