Why Self-Identify? Learn more from other Queen's students

Learn more from Indigenous students who choose to self-identify!

Brittany Macbeth

“Self identifying sparked an interest in learning more about my culture. I didn't really know much about my background, other than knowing my mum was Mohawk. Now after coming to Four Directions, I am able to serve as a mentor to Aboriginal Youth in Kingston by getting involved with the Right to Play NGO. I am so inspired. I have learned as much from them as they have learned from me.”

Thomas Diamond

“It was a no-brainer – I never really knew what to do with it. I love how you feel included in this community.  I choose to self-identify in class. I like that people look to me in class as a resource. A lot of people in medicine are unaware of our history, and it is an opportunity educate, grow personally, and push myself beyond my own boundaries.”

Taylor Bluhm

“I’ve never not self-identified. It has made me more comfortable with myself. Its nice to talk to people who are going through the same things as you are. If I ever have a question about absolutely anything, Four Directions is always there to help answer my questions. I am so excited to be the Alma Mater Society’s (AMS) Deputy Commissioner of Indigenous Affairs next year!”

Jason Mercredi

“Throughout my undergrad I have worked as an Indigenous liaison. I now work with the Law School on developing better ways to implement enrolment and retention strategies.I have always self-identified. I have always understood Canada as not having a general knowledge of who aboriginal people are, so self-identifying is my way of contributing to the education system. Choosing to self-identify at Queen’s is my way of letting the administration and the students know there are indigenous people here - and more will be enrolling.”

Catalina Thornhill

“ I choose to self-Identify because I have access to resources that I wouldn't have otherwise been exposed to. It is extremely helpful to have a personal support system for specific questions at anytime.”
