AVAIALBLE EXPERT - Health experts call for postponing or moving Olympic Games

Friday, May 13, 2016

Queen’s University infectious diseases expert Dick Zoutman is available to comment a call to postpone or move the upcoming Olympic Games in Brazil over concerns about the Zika virus.

“The current Zika virus outbreak in South and Central America, including the epicentre Brazil, is a great concern to the public health international community,” says Dr. Zoutman. “The upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will bring together over 10,000 athletes and hundreds of thousands of spectators and support staff. It is imperative that public health officials carefully consider the safety of all of those who will flock to Rio in August. This needs to be well communicated and needs to include letting all participants and visitors know what steps they can take to prevent exposure or to avoid exposure altogether.”

Please note Dr. Zoutman is available from noon until 1:30 pm and after 4:30 pm today. He’s also available over the weekend.
