Available Expert - Available Expert- Slippery slope: the impact of road salt and the environment

Monday, January 17, 2022

Queen’s Expert Shelley Arnott (Biology) is available to speak to media about the use of road salt on wintery roads. Road crews across the province are clearing highways and streets as a snow storm blasts southern Ontario.

“The use of deicers is critical for ensuring safety on roads and paved surfaces” says Dr. Arnott.  “However, much of the salt we apply ends up in waterways and causes harm to aquatic life and threats freshwater ecosystems and the services they provide. We need to find a better way that balances human safety and the protection of aquatic resources. One important step is to stop over-applying de-icing salts.”

Blizzard conditions in Ontario have forced school closures and made getting around hazardous.

Some parts of the province could see up to 50 centimeters of snow before the system tapers off later Monday.
