Available Expert - Belgium's Walloon parliament backs CETA trade agreement

Friday, October 28, 2016

Queen's University trade expert Robert Wolfe is available to comment on the significance of the Wallon parliament voting in favour of a compromise package to clear an impasse that was blocking the approval of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. The Belgian Parliament still needs to hold a vote the agreement, which was held up by the regional parliament in Wallonia over concerns relating to Canadian access to the European agricultural market.

Dr. Wolfe will be able to comment on the agreement as a whole, as well as the lessons that can be gleaned from the negotiations. In addition, he will be able to address questions moving forward from the negotiations, such as whether Wallonia's success in gaining concessions could embolden other groups or sub-national legislatures to seek similar benefits in future trade deals, or whether this will lead to more thorough negotiations in the future to avoid similar hold-ups.

Dr. Wolfe is a professor in the Queen's School of Policy Studies and an expert on international trade. He will be available for interviews during the afternoon (after 2 pm EDT) on October 28.

To arrange an interview, please contact communication officer Chris Armes (613-533-6000 ext. 77513 or chris.armes@queensu.ca) or Anne Craig (613-533-2877 or anne.craig@queensu.ca) at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., Canada.
