Available Expert - Bonkalo report on family law released today

Monday, February 27, 2017

Queen’s University family law professor Nick Bala is available to comment on the release of the Family Legal Services Review. The review, led by former Chief Justice Anne-Marie Bonkalo (Law’76), aims to improve access to justice including legal representation in family court.

“The report will address a number of issues related to access to family justice,” says Professor Bala. “I have done quite a lot of research on access to family justice and self-represented family litigants, and made a submission to the Review. I have not seen the Report, but have an idea of what is in it.  While I think there are many good proposals, the issues are complex and, I worry that there may be a rush to implementation without careful consideration of some of the implications.  There is clearly a role for greater use of paralegals, law students and other professionals in improving access to family justice, but this is a complex, highly challenging area of law, and inadequate advice and representation can have catastrophic effects, both for litigants and their children.”

Please note Professor Bala is available by phone between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm today.
