Available Expert - Canada readies to legalize marijuana

Wednesday, June 20, 2018

Queen’s University expert Oyedeji Ayonrinde is available to comment on the passing of Bill C-45 which will legalize marijuana in Canada.

“Countdown has started in earnest as we approach the global milestone to legalization of cannabis for recreational use. With the debates over, it is time to put the practical and supportive infrastructure in place, mainly knowledge,” says Dr. Ayonrinde.

“Legalization was guided by contemporary knowledge regarding the risks and harms associated with cannabis.  Now all cadres of society will need to be sufficiently cannabis literate to make informed decisions and choices regarding recreational use.  Sufficient knowledge would also be required to recognize harmful effects, which though not common to all users, are considerably higher in young people with developing brains. Here the vulnerability to psychosis, educational and driving impairment leave us with a clear moral and social responsibility.”

An associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Ayonrinde also works as the medical director of the Heads Up! Early Psychosis Intervention Program.
