Available Expert - Canada to send troops as part of NATO deterrent to Russia

Thursday, June 30, 2016

Queen's University defence and security expert Christian Leuprecht is available to comment on reports that the federal cabinet has authorized Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan ‎to provide up to a battalion of Canadian troops to a rotating force of 4,000 troops on NATO’s eastern flank in Poland and the Baltic region. The move is designed to deter Russia from attempting to extend its influence further into eastern Europe. Canada is expected to formally agree to the plan at next week's NATO Summit in Poland. The announcement comes less than 24 hours after US President Barack Obama addressed the Canadian Parliament, asking the government to "contribute (its) full share" to NATO joint security efforts.

Dr. Christian Leuprecht is a professor of Political Studies at Queen's University, cross-appointed to the Royal Military College of Canada. His research focuses primarily on security and defence, political demography, and comparative federalism and multilevel governance.

Dr. Leuprecht is available by telephone for print and radio interviews only.
