Available Expert - Cannabis industry among fastest-growing job sectors

Wednesday, April 11, 2018

Queen’s University business expert John-Kurt Pliniussen is available to comment on reports that the cannabis industry is currently among the fastest growing employment sectors.

"The marijuana industry is creating a growing demand for many jobs; some old (e.g., retail store managers and staff, web site content developers, delivery people, greenhouse staff) and some new (e.g., edible makers, budtenders, harvesters, brokers),” says Dr. Pliniussen. “It is also creating the need for quality control brands and a new labelling format for the products so consumers know what they are purchasing and using, as well as why they should pay more or less for some brands over others.”

“Lastly, there is a need for a way of measuring the impact these products are having on someone driving a car or boat,” he says. “We have legal guidelines for alcohol, but not yet for marijuana based products.”

“The tsunami has already started and soon we will see how big a job wave will hit the Canadian labour market,” he adds.

Dr. Pliniussen is currently working with Queen’s psychiatrist Oyedi Ayonrinde on cannabis projects. Together, they are developing programs related to communicating the hazards associated with the high and potent THC content in some marijuana strains and products.
