Available Expert - Celebrating the Christmas season

Thursday, December 13, 2018

A number of Queen's University experts are available to comment on topics relating to the holiday season. These are the first two in the series. Topics will cover a wide range of areas, including family dynamics, spirituality, shopping and security.

Monica LaBarge (Business) is available to comment on how companies get us to spend our Christmas dollars on their products.

“Companies work very hard at this time of year convincing us to buy gifts from them instead of the competition,” says Dr. LaBarge. “They might try product seeding with key influencers or trying to get into Top 10 lists curated by experts. They also drive purchases with various price promotions and promoting the scarcity of their products.”

Please note Dr. LaBarge is not available for television interviews.

David Murakami Wood (Surveillance Studies Centre) is available to comment on gift giving in the era of privacy issues and data leaks.

“This holiday season, don’t give the gift of surveillance,” says Dr. Murakami Wood. “The general public should use appropriate caution when giving gifts that are essentially data-harvesting devices including voice assistants and smart technology.”

To arrange an interview, please contact communications officer Anne Craig (613-533-2877 or anne.craig@queensu.ca) at Queen’s University News and Media Services Department in Kingston, Ont., Canada.
