The federal government is proposing changes to Canada’s bail system through Bill C-48, but what impact will this have on public safety?
Dr. Nicole Myers (Sociology) is available to speak to media about how changes to Canada’s bail system will likely have only a limited impact on public safety.
“Canada does not have a lenient bail system- there have been more people in pre-trial detention than in sentenced provincial custody since 2004/5. The court system is overburdened with minor matters making it difficult to focus the necessary time and resources on those perceived to be the most risky. The best way to protect the public is through long term sustained investment in mental health, substance use services and housing supports.”
