Available Expert - Chilcot Report and the UK's involvement in the Iraq War

Wednesday, July 6, 2016

Queen's University defence expert Chris Kilford is available to comment on the release of the UK Iraq War Inquiry report, overseen by retired civil servant Sir John Chilcot. The 2.6 million word report slammed the decision by former Prime Minister Tony Blair to enter the conflict, stating that the UK chose to join invasion before peaceful options for disarming Saddam had been exhausted, failed to achieve its stated objective and that there was no imminent treat from former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein to justify the war.

"Western-led military interventions in the Middle East, in particular, have almost always been built around lies," says Dr. Kilford. "The 2003 invasion of Iraq was no different and the lessons-learned from removing Saddam Hussein seemingly forgotten when NATO set-out to topple the Libyan government in 2011 and countries such as the United States and Canada attempted to do the same in Syria soon after."

Dr. Chris Kilford served in the Canadian Armed Forces as an artillery officer from 1982-2014, and as Canada’s Defence Attaché to Turkey from 2011-2014. He is currently a Fellow with the Queen’s Centre for International and Defence Policy. Dr. Kilford has spoken extensively in the media on the topics of Turkish and Middle Eastern security issues, civil-mililtary relations in developing countries, Canadian foreign and defence policy, and terrorism.

Dr. Kilford is available for interviews via Skype and Facetime.
