Available Expert - Chrystia Freeland sworn in as Finance Minister

Wednesday, August 19, 2020

Queen’s University expert Kathy Brock (Policy Studies) is available to comment on the historic appointment of Chrystia Freeland as Federal Finance Minister. Freeland was officially sworn in yesterday at Rideau Hall, during a time when Canada is dealing with the biggest budget deficit since the second world war.

“Chrystia Freeland is walking into a very tough role that will require all of her political acumen. Not only must she manage the exit out of the pandemic shutdown and develop a plan for dealing with unprecedented deficit and debt levels, she will need to manage the fall-out from mismanaged or poorly handled contracts like the WE student grants, CERB  etc. And, she will have to answer why the government continues to duck from parliamentary scrutiny.” says Professor Brock.

The role of finance minister is considered to be the top cabinet post in Canadian politics.
