Available Expert - European Parliament approves Canada-EU trade agreement

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

Queen’s University trade expert Robert Wolfe is available to comment on the European Parliament approving the Canada-EU trade agreement. About 58 per cent of the members of the Parliament voted to ratify the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) setting the stage for provisional application of nearly 90 per cent of the agreement later this spring.

“Provisional implementation of much of CETA is a high priority for Canada. CETA is a considerable achievement,” says Dr. Wolfe “The political obstacles to full ratification in Europe should not prevent provisional application of most of the agreement in the course of 2017. The commercial opportunities it will enable are important in themselves, as are innovations such as the Canada-EU regulatory cooperation forum, but the political signal of implementation is especially important at a time of resurgent economic nationalism.”

Dr. Wolfe is the co-editor of the upcoming Institute for Research on Public Policy book Redesigning Canadian Trade Policies for New Global Realities.

Please note Dr. Wolfe is only available for phone interviews.
