Available Expert - Facebook to make major newsfeed overhaul

Friday, January 12, 2018

Queen’s University digital marketing expert Neil Bearse is available to comment on Facebook’s announcement that it will be changing its newsfeed algorithm to prioritize posts from your friends and family and reduce the amount of content you see from publishers and brands.

“Facebook’s relationship with its users and publishers has always been complicated – to use their own terminology,” says Mr. Bearse. “Users want to keep in touch with friends and family. Businesses want to push content to as many people as possible. There is only one newsfeed, so something has to give.”

“Optimizing to increase user satisfaction is the smart, long-term strategy,” he says. “If a few publishers choose to leave, Facebook might lose revenue – but advertisers will always crave attention and data. If users choose to leave – they lose the business entirely.”
