AVAILABLE EXPERT - Federal Budget 2016

Tuesday, March 22, 2016

Queen's University political expert Kathy Brock is available for comment on, or provide reaction to, the 2016 Federal Budget, being tabled today in the House of Commons.

Dr. Brock is available to provide analysis on which components of the 2015 Liberal Party platform are likely to be achieved in this budget, as well as the possible outcomes for municipalities, interest groups and segments of the population.

"Budgets are inherently political documents that provide insight into the government’s priorities and strategies. The first budget of the new Liberal Government will also serve as a powerful signal of how it intends to interpret its mandate, who it believes it can disappoint and whose support it needs," says Dr. Brock. "If the Liberals are going to backtrack on some promises, it is best to do so early in their mandate and in this budget. However, doing so may affect their image as a government that is going to govern differently and responsibly. The challenge of this budget will be to achieve the right balance between these imperatives."

Dr. Brock is available for comment on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 22 and during the day Wednesday, March 23.
