Available Expert - Government examining 600 buildings after Grenfell Tower fire

Thursday, June 22, 2017

Queen’s University civil engineering expert Mark Green is available to comment on the Grenfell Tower fire. The UK government is now conducting safety checks on an estimated 600 high-rise buildings in London, England which have exterior cladding panels. Cladding may have played a part in the June 14 disaster that saw 79 people die.

A preliminary report will be released in the next couple of days.

“The Grenfell Tower fire was a tragic disaster with the loss of many lives and the disruption of homes for many people,” says Dr. Green. “The preliminary report is likely to focus on the combustible cladding that was installed on the building as the cause of the rapid and widespread nature of the fire. The situation was made worse because the building had only one staircase for evacuation of the building. Also, the building did not have sprinklers which could have mitigated the spread of the fire into interior portions of the building. The building performed reasonably well from a structural perspective because collapse of the building did not occur despite the long duration of the fire.”

Background: Mark Green is currently Professor and Associate Head in the Department of Civil Engineering at Queen’s University. His research interests include the structural performance of concrete structures in fire scenarios, and he is currently conducting research on the high temperature performance of sustainable concrete and fibre reinforced polymers for concrete construction.
