Available Expert - Interest grows around a potential NDP leadership bid by Jagmeet Singh

Thursday, February 16, 2017

Queen's University political expert Christo Aivalis is available to comment on growing calls for Brampton MPP Jagmeet Singh to enter the federal NDP leadership race. Supporters say that his track-record, experience and style all combine to create a formidable candidate who could shake-up what has been a quiet leadership race.

Dr. Aivalis suggests that his "suave" style and charisma would allow him to go toe-to-toe with Prime Minister Trudeau, while his identity as a Sikh Canadian could help the NDP make inroads into previously-underserved communities.

"Specifically for the NDP, there has always been difficulties in reaching out to certain immigrant and racialized communities," explains Dr. Aivalis. "With someone like MPP Singh at the helm, the party might find a voice to reach these communities often under-served by mainstream discourse."

Dr. Aivalis cautions about considering his candidacy as imminent, given his current high profile provincial role as deputy leader of the Ontario NDP and the possibilities available to him at Queen's Park.

"If Andrea Horwath leads the NDP to victory in 2018, than MPP Singh will almost certainly be a top-tier cabinet minister," he adds. "If she has a poor showing, he is the overwhelming favorite to be her successor."

Dr. Aivalis is an adjunct professor of Canadian Political and Labour History at Queen's University. He has commented extensively in the past on a range of topics - from public sector labour negotiations to federal party politics.
