Available Expert - New RCMP commissioner being named today

Friday, March 9, 2018

Queen’s University gender in the military expert Meaghan Shoemaker is available to comment on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau naming Brenda Lucki as Canada’s first permanent female RCMP commissioner.

“Increasing the representation of women throughout the ranks, particularly in senior level positions in all defence and security is required to create meaningful change,” says Ms. Shoemaker, Project Coordinator, Centre for International and Defence Policy’s Gender Lab. “This diversity of perspectives in leadership in the RCMP is one of the first steps toward addressing internal culture challenges. We see these challenges the RCMP and the Canadian Armed Forces face regarding sexual violence in both the Marie Deschamps Report and the sexual harassment lawsuit for the RCMP.”

“Assistant Commissioner Brenda Lucki's experience as Commanding Officer of Depot Division (where RCMP cadets are trained) provides her with a strategic advantage. She will be able to lead from the front while also understanding that diversity, inclusion, and respect, must also be institutionalized and integrated at the training and education level for new cadets.”
