Available Expert - Pope Francis endorses same sex unions in new documentary

Thursday, October 22, 2020

Queen’s University expert Pamela Dickey Young is available to comment on Pope Francis’ endorsement of same -sex civil unions. He is the first Pontiff to do so. Pope Francis made the comments for the full length documentary Francesco that premiered at the Rome Film Festival October 21st. “Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God,” Francis said. “You can't kick someone out of a family, nor make their life miserable for this. What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered.”

The announcement sparked cheers from gay Catholics and demands for clarification from conservatives, given the Vatican's official teaching on the issue.

"It is a huge step forward for LGBTQI+ Catholics that Pope Francis endorses the idea that love is love by supporting civil unions for LGBTQI+ couples.  But this still falls far short of official recognition of the diversity of loving relationships within the Catholic Church." Says Dickey Young.
