AVAILABLE EXPERT: Pope Francis visits U.S. for the first time

Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Queen’s University School of Religion professor John Young is available to comment on Pope Francis coming to the United States for the first time.

“Pope Francis’s visit to the United States promises to be interesting for a number of reasons,” says Dr. Young. “First, he will have just come from Cuba, and he appears to have a clear desire to promote closer relationships between these two countries, something perhaps not surprising given that he is from South America. Second, during his pontificate, he has demonstrated a willingness to listen to a wide range of views on a number of issues, thereby demonstrating an openness that, whether fairly or not, would be judged by some not to have been present since Vatican II. Finally, and again unsurprisingly given where he served in Argentina, he has quite consistently pressed for a greater consideration by society of the needs of the poor, the dispossessed, and the refugee.”
