Available Expert - Pope’s historic apology and Canada’s reconciliation journey

Monday, July 25, 2022

Queen’s expert, Bob Watts (Policy Studies) is available to talk about the Pope’s apology as part of the reconciliation journey in Canada and what this week means for reconciliation moving forward.

Pope Francis arrived in Canada on Sunday and apologized to survivors and their families in Maskawacis, Alberta, for the role that the Catholic Church played in Canada's residential school system. More than half of Canada’s residential schools were run by the Catholic Church from the 1800s to 1996.

The six-day tour will see Pope Francis travel to Quebec and Nunavut later this week for other events around reconciliation, forgiveness, and healing.

The 58th call to action from Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) called on the Pope to issue an apology on Canadian soil for the Catholic Church's role in the residential school system. This Papal visit comes seven years after the TRC was released and it marks the fourth papal visit in Canadian history.
