Available Expert - President Trump prepares to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital

Wednesday, December 6, 2017

Queen’s University expert John McGarry is available to comment on President Donald Trump recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on Wednesday. The announcement will fulfill a campaign promise but will likely end any possibility of peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

There is also widespread worry the announcement will bring instability to the region.

“If Trump recognizes ‘all’ of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, it will be a mistake, but that is not his only option,” says Dr. McGarry. “He could also say that Jerusalem is big enough to be the capital of two states, and that the Old City should have a special status.”

Dr. McGarry is the Canada Research Chair in Nationalism and Democracy.
