Available Expert - Prime Minister Trudeau prepares to visit Cuba

Thursday, November 10, 2016

Queen’s University Cuban relations expert Karen Dubinsky is available to comment on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's scheduled visits to Cuba, Argentina and Peru next week. The Prime Minister will retrace some of his father’s historic footsteps and has plans to meet with Cuban President Raul Castro on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

“There is definitely an important Trudeau family history with Cuba,” says Dr. Dubinsky. “Pierre Trudeau’s visit in 1976 marked the first time a Western leader had visited since 1960. I also want to emphasize the importance of the unbroken Canadian/Cuban relations since Cuba’s 1959 revolution.”

For nine years Dr. Dubinsky has taught a joint Queen’s/University of Havana course which brings Canadian students to Havana and Cuban artists, musicians and intellectuals to Canada. She is also the author of recently published book Cuba Beyond the Beach: Stories of Life in Havana, a grassroots, neighbourhood view of daily life and culture in Havana written by an intimate outsider. She is currently on tour with the book.
