Available Expert - Prime Minister Trudeau vows to improve refugee system

Monday, December 5, 2016

Queen’s University immigration expert Sharry Aiken is available to comment on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s vow to significantly improve the refugee system. Refugee sponsors in Canada told the Prime Minister they are frustrated by a lack of communication.

“The Prime Minister’s suggestion that improvements are needed with respect to the government’s capacity to share information with sponsors is very welcome,” says Professor Aiken. “This is long overdue and it deserves mention that these problems extend throughout the system - not just for refugees. As for the Prime Minister’s comments regarding support for settlement and integration - there is no doubt Canada can do better. His comments are thin on details - but so many of the current challenges stem from a lack of adequate resources for settlement agencies at the grassroots level - and a lack of effective coordination between various levels of government.”

Professor Aiken’s research focuses on the controversies, complexities and challenges posted by immigration and border security.
