Available Expert - Pro-Trump supporters storm the Capitol

Wednesday, January 6, 2021

Queen’s University political studies expert Christian Leuprecht is available to talk about protestors in the United States flooding the US Capitol as Congress debates electoral college objections.

The latest vote count of the Electoral College vote was won by Joe Biden.

“The social contract in a democracy is to forsake violence to make political differences known and instead to respect the legislature as the ultimate arbiter to reconcile such differences” says Leuprecht. “ A vocal and non-trivial minority of disaffected, not just but especially in American, are demonstrably disavowing their own social contract, egged on by a President who puts his own interests ahead of those of the country.  It is a manifestation of the ongoing polarization and radicalization of US society that is indicative of the challenges the new administration and Congress will face domestically.  That domestic preoccupation does not bode well for US leadership on international affairs or democracy.”
