AVAILABLE EXPERT: Proposed assisted suicide bill

Tuesday, December 2, 2014

Queen’s University bioethics expert Udo Schuklenk is available to comment on a new bill introduced by two senators that would legalize physician-assisted suicide if eventually passed.

Senator Nancy Ruth from Ontario and Senator Larry Campbell from British Columbia say this bill will allow an opportunity for those in severe pain and difficulty to make a choice when it comes to the end of their lives.

“Senators Ruth and Campbell ought to be applauded for taking this bold initiative,” says Dr. Schuklenk. “It will be interesting to see whether our unelected senators are prepared to vote for legislation that broadly is supported by more than 80 per cent of Canadians. We know already that the government of the day will not support the bill. Perhaps the nature of the Senate will permit votes based on reason as opposed to other allegiances.”

Please note that Dr. Schuklenk is available today before 3:30 pm.
