Available Expert - Queen's University expert comments on Canadian court ruling Safe Third Country pact with US is invalid

Wednesday, July 22, 2020

Queen’s University immigration expert Sharry Aiken is available to comment on Canada’s Federal Court ruling that a pact that compels asylum seekers trying to cross the border into Canada to first apply for sanctuary in the United States was invalid. The court said in a ruling that the so-called Safe Third Country Agreement between the two neighbors infringed Canada’s Charter of Human Rights.

Professor Aiken acted as the Co-chair of the Canadian Council for Refugees' steering committee on this litigation and provided support and acted in an advisory capacity to the CCR’s legal team.
