AVAILABLE EXPERT – Report of the Special Joint Committee on Physician-Assisted Dying

Queen's University bioethicist Udo Schuklenk is available to comment and provide context on the Report of the Special Joint Committee on Physician-Assisted Dying, made public today.

The report, produced by the parliamentary committee assigned to study the topic, following the Supreme Court's decision to strike down existing laws prohibiting physician assisted dying, says that medical assistance in dying should be made immediately available with few obstacles to to competent adults 18 years or older who are suffering from grievous and irremediable medical conditions that cause enduring suffering.

Dr. Schuklenk is the former Chair of the Royal Society of Canada Expert Panel on End-of-life Decision-Making in Canada. He has spoken at length on the ethical considerations of physician-assisted dying, including in a range of interviews, academic articles and on his blog.
