Available Expert - Rick Mercer Report ends after 15 seasons

Monday, September 25, 2017

Queen’s University film and mass culture expert Blaine Allan is available to comment on the announcement that the Rick Mercer Report will end after 15 seasons, and to discuss Rick Mercer’s larger contribution to Canadian media and political culture.

“The Mercer Report has been a remarkable contribution to the history of political satire in Canada, while also being recognizable as part of a tradition in the nation's media,” says Dr. Allen. “In that vein, evident for years, since This Hour Has Seven Days in the 1960s, the CBC and other media producers have deftly broadcast programs with both sharp edges and soft corners.  Rick Mercer "punches up," as a satirist ought to put the practitioners of power in his sights and plant blows square to their chins, and yet also gets naked (as he did with Bob Rae) with the same paragons of authority.”
