AVAILABLE EXPERT: Scathing report on the Canadian military

Thursday, April 30, 2015

Queen’s University military expert Stefanie von Hlatky is available to comment on the report Sexual Misconduct and Sexual Harassment in the Canadian Armed Forces. The report says the CAF is marred by a sexualized culture that disproportionately affects women and homosexual members.

“The public release of the external review on sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces and corresponding action plan is the beginning of a long process of cultural change that will address what has been termed an ‘underlying sexualized culture in the Canadian Armed Forces that is hostile to women and LGTBQ members’ by the report’s external review authority Marie Deschamps,” says Dr. von Hlatky, an expert in gender in the military.

“It is essential that the Canadian Armed Forces embrace diversity and communicate to all of its members how a diverse force benefits the military. Further, the proposed action plan has the potential to improve a system that has discouraged the reporting of sexual incidents only if it makes room for victims to be involved in designing the solution.”

Dr. von Hlatky is also the director of the Queen’s Centre for International and Defence Policy.
