AVAILABLE EXPERT – Seven FIFA officials arrested on corruption charges

Wednesday, May 27, 2015

Queen’s University sports history expert Geoff Smith is available to comment on seven FIFA officials being arrested in Switzerland on charges of corruption. The seven are now facing extradition to the United States. United States authorities said nine soccer officials and five sports media and promotions executives are also facing corruption charges involving more than $150 million in bribes.

“So much in modern day sport is based on the almighty bottom line,” says Professor Smith. “FIFA is very similar in structure to the International Olympic Committee in power and the money at stake. And, as we know, power corrupts, in this case terribly.”

Please note Professor Smith is only available for phone interviews.
