Available Expert - Social media post highlights gender inequalities at NCAA tournament

Friday, March 19, 2021

Queen’s expert Courtney Szto (Kinesiology) is available to talk about concerns over inequality in the men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments.

"We have been focused on providing equality of opportunity to women and girls for decades but the discrepancies we are seeing at this year's March Madness facilities illustrate the need for equality of conditions as well. We are past simply being happy with the opportunity to play. It is time we respect women as athletes and athletic labourers who cannot reach their potential without the appropriate resources to do so." Says Szto.

Images posted to social media by Stanford sports performance coach for women’s basketball Ali Kershner show the women’s weight training facilities in San Antonio were severely lacking compared to what the men have in Indianapolis.  There are also concerns that food options for woman have been an issue too.
