Available Expert - Supreme Court rules today on releasing of real estate information

Thursday, August 23, 2018

Queen’s University real estate and planning expert John Andrew is available to comment on today’s Supreme Court of Canada decision that will end a seven year dispute between the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) and the federal Competition Bureau.

“The Supreme Court of Canada will announce today whether it will hear the appeal by the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) of the Federal Court of Appeal’s ruling that TREB cannot stop its member realtors from releasing data on the actual selling price of homes on their own websites,” explains Dr. Andrew. “Like most real estate boards in Canada, TREB has been trying to keep to itself as much residential real estate data as possible; meaning that members of the public must hire a realtor in order to have any access to it.

“In the United States, nearly all data about real estate is freely available, and this has stimulated the development of innovative websites and smartphone apps. Rather than posing a threat to the industry, this has actually been healthy and has stimulated home sales. Today’s decision is important to the real estate industry and there will be ramifications for markets across Canada.”
