AVAILABLE EXPERT – Taxi drivers in France riot over Uber

Thursday, June 25, 2015

Queen’s University business expert John-Kurt Pliniussen is available to comment on ongoing riots in France that are the result of rising tensions between taxi companies and Uber.

“Last year, when Google invested nearly $250 million in Uber, taxi owners around the world should have really taken notice,” says Mr. Pliniussen. “Uber has expanded to some 60 cities on six continents and grown to at least 400 employees. Millions of people have used Uber to get a ride, and revenue has increased at a rate of nearly 20 per cent every month over the past year.

“The riots in France will not make any difference because commuters will be even more irritated with the taxi industry. Anyone who has ever used Uber knows it's different with upbeat drivers, fast service, no tipping, and the use of a driver rating system that helps guarantee continued quality. With fewer city based millennials owning cars, Uber is also an attractive alternative for them.”
