Available Expert - Thousands protest as Catalan officials arrested

Thursday, September 21, 2017

Queen’s University professor John McGarry is available to comment on the contested referendum to split Catalonia from Spain. People are taking to the streets amid a government crackdown on the independence vote that included the arrests of a dozen regional officials and the seizure of 10 million ballot papers.

“It’s very exceptional for a Western state to arrest politicians for non-violent activities,” noted Dr. McGarry.

Dr. McGarry is the Canada Research Chair in Nationalism and Democracy and his work focuses on the design of political institutions in deeply divided places.
