Available Expert - Vladimir Putin announces he will run for re-election to Russian presidency

Wednesday, December 6, 2017

Queen’s University’s Head of Political Studies, Zsuzsa Csergő, is available for comment on Vladimir Putin’s announcement that he will seek a new six-year term as President of Russia.

“There is strong support in Russia for political stability and continuity,” says Dr. Csergő. “Russia is not a liberal democracy with a pluralist democratic political culture and has never had a tradition of political parties and leaders taking turns in power, and of political institutions ‘checking’ each other’s power. Succession is smooth, predictable, and controlled.

“There is no question in my mind that Putin will win the 2018 presidential elections,” she adds. “He is very popular and has worked to restore Russia’s power standing in the world. He has the tools to win, including control over political institutions and the media. And there is no credible opposition strong enough to defeat him at this time."

“If he wins, he will surely remain a highly activist player in world politics.”

Dr. Csergő is available for print/radio interviews between 2 pm - 5 pm EST.
