AVAILABLE EXPERTS: Professors comment on proposed immigrant ban

Wednesday, November 5, 2014

Queen’s University legal experts Sharry Aiken and Nick Bala can comment on the Conservatives tabling a bill today banning immigrants in polygamous or forced marriages. The government is saying these practices are incompatible with Canadian values.

“While many of these problems I regressed in different pieces of current legislation, it is good that the government is considering a more comprehensive and clear law,” says Mr. Bala. “Issues of forced and polygamist marriages, especially groups, have not been well dealt with in Canadian society. The changes need to be not only legal but also in terms of social supports and education.”

Ms. Aiken is “sharply critical of the proposed measures” to ban these immigrants from Canada.
