Available Experts - World Cancer Day

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, two in five Canadian adults are expected to develop cancer in their lifetimes. While significant strides have been made to increase survival rates, cancer remains a leading cause of death in Canada and around the world.  To recognize World Cancer Day on February 4, the following Queen’s University experts are available to speak to media about advances in cancer treatment and care, issues around access to and affordability of cancer drugs, and what the impact of the global pandemic, which has led to numerous delays in diagnoses, may mean to prognosis and quality of life.  

 

Chris Booth (Oncology; Public Health Sciences) can speak about global oncology, value of cancer care, and health system performance.

Timothy Hanna (Oncology) can speak to the prioritization of cancer care and control during the pandemic, including the possible impact of cancer treatment delay on mortality.

Annette Hay (Medicine) can talk about acute leukemia clinical care and research, and the EASE clinical trial (Emotion and symptom-focused engagement), which focuses on the importance of quality of life while living with cancer.

Bishal Gyawali (Oncology; Public Health Sciences) can speak to policy issues related to trial designs, approval, funding, toxicities, quality of life, and overall access and affordability of cancer drugs. Dr. Gyawali can also talk about the global disparities in cancer research and outcomes.

Janet Jull (Rehabilitation Therapy) can talk about the urgent need for Inuit to be able to access and receive appropriate health care.  Dr. Jull can also talk about enhancing opportunities for Inuit to participate in decisions about their health care.
