Media Advisory - Queen's welcomes The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell for lecture series

Wednesday, January 17, 2018

KINGSTON – Queen’s University School of Policy Studies hosts the 2017 Donald Gow Memorial Lecture A World That Works for Everyone featuring The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Her Honour will reflect on insights gained from conversations with Ontarians – their pride in community and country and their identification of challenges they face in a fast-paced, interdependent and complex world. The lecture is an exploration of who we are and who we want to be.

The Ms. Dowdeswell was invested as Ontario’s 29th Lieutenant Governor on September 23, 2014. Her public service career has spanned provincial, federal, and international borders, and has transcended disciplinary and sectoral lines.

She was born in Northern Ireland and immigrated to rural Saskatchewan with her parents in 1947. She earned a Bachelor of Science in home economics and teaching certificate from the University of Saskatchewan (1966) and a Master of Science in behavioural sciences from Utah State University (1972). An Officer of the Order of Canada, Ms. Dowdeswell holds 11 honorary degrees.

In her time as Lieutenant Governor, Ms. Dowdeswell has focused on issues of “Ontario in the World” and sustainability, including its three inter-connected part: environmental stewardship, inclusive prosperity, and social cohesion.

The Donald Gow Memorial Lecture series, established in 1973, honours Donald Gow, the first director of the School of Public Administration. The Donald Gow Memorial Lecture brings a prominent figure in public affairs to Queen’s University each year to speak on a topic in Canadian public policy. It is intended to complement the basic direction of the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, which encourages interdisciplinary analysis of public policy issues.

Thursday, January 18
Robert Sutherland Hall, Room 202, 138 Union Street
The lecture runs from noon until 1 pm. The media are invited to an interview opportunity with the Lieutenant Governor after the event.
