News Release - Queen’s Faculty of Health Sciences takes leadership role in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Friday, September 25, 2020

The Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University is set to become one of the first interprofessional Faculties in the country to establish a permanent office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

Part of that action will include a new Dean’s Action Table — with an executive and seven working groups that will explore best practices, make recommendations and find opportunities for educational scholarship, writing, and other forms of communication to support initiatives in equity, diversity and inclusion.

All of this will be supported by a new Faculty of Health Sciences fund that has been created in collaboration with the Carrick Family, whose generous commitment of $200,000 will not only provide critical support for the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, but will also assist in recruitment and aid for students from under-represented groups.

“We are experiencing a period of unprecedented awareness about systemic racism and other forms of oppression. Our approach to addressing these matters must be more than notional. We need action,” says Dr. Jane Philpott, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. “We are all obliged to ensure an equitable, diverse, inclusive, accessible, and culturally safe approach to teaching, research, and care." Jane Philpott, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Queen's University

“Our collective success will require personal, organizational and cultural humility. We will all need to study, to learn and unlearn about history and culture.” Jane Philpott, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Queen's University
