Statement regarding Chance Macdonald as a guest speaker in May 2018

Tuesday, November 27, 2018

The University can confirm that at the invitation of an individual faculty member, Chance Macdonald did participate as a guest speaker in one business class, via Skype, in May 2018.

Individual faculty members have the freedom to invite guest speakers from their own networks where they feel those guests will add to the class, and they work directly with the speakers to coordinate their activities.

The participation of Mr. Macdonald in this instance was unfortunate. As we expressed at the time of his conviction, the University shares and sympathizes with the emotions that people were expressing about the original incident. Similarly, the University shares the concerns about the May 2018 speaking event.

Ensuring Queen’s maintains a safe and inclusive learning and living environment for students, faculty and staff is an important responsibility. To that end, the Faculty involved has committed to engaging in a review of its processes around guest speakers.

Since the time of his conviction, Mr. Macdonald has not returned to campus.
