Queen's University cardiologist and health policy expert Chris Simpson is available to comment on the meeting taking place between the federal and provincial health ministers. The ministers have been meeting to discuss a possible increase to the federal health transfer to support home care and mental health programs. Tensions have been reportedly high, with Quebec Health Minister Gaétan Barrette reportedly suggesting Quebec may walk out of the meetings if additional funding is not offered.

"Its been said that the last health accord, in 2004, bought time but not change," says Dr. Simpson. "This time, we have all been so hopeful that a new accord could be more transformative. It's been disappointing to see that it has devolved into a discussion of money yet again, when instead, what we really need is leadership.Deciding who pays for health care is important, but what we need even more than that is a path to a sustainable health care system that provides proper access and quality."

Dr. Simpson is available by phone after 2 pm on December 19, 2016.
