ASUS Sidewalk Sale goes virtual

The Arts and Science Undergraduate Society (ASUS) Sidewalk Sale is one of the traditions of Queen’s orientation.

In the past, booths were set up along University Avenue, allowing incoming students to make connections with the Kingston and Queen’s communities. COVID-19 restrictions meant that organizers would have to find an alternative format.

The result is the Virtual Sidewalk Sale, an online resource featuring more than 60 local businesses and community organizations.

“We’re really hoping to engage the incoming students of the Class of 2024 during this uncertain time with local organizations in the Kingston community as well as businesses that have participated with us for a number of years,” Sara Stephens, Community Awareness, Respect, and Engagement Chair for the ASUS Orientation Committee. “Our team worked for months to move this big and exciting in-person event into something very informative that hopefully will last beyond the orientation period itself and into the next couple of years while these students continue their studies at Queen’s.”

The event is also a fundraiser with each participating business or organization making a donation to the Kingston chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society.
