Pascale Champagne named director at National Institute for Scientific Research

The National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) recently announced that Queen’s University professor of civil and chemical engineering Pascale Champagne has been named its scientific director.

Based in Quebec City, INRS is a graduate research institute composed of four research and teaching centers located in different cities (Montréal, Laval, Varennes and Quebec).

Since arriving to Queen’s in 2005, Dr. Champagne, who is an expert in alternate water and waste management strategies and environmentally sustainable approaches, led a very successful research and teaching program. As the Canada Research Chair in Bioresource Engineering and a professor cross-appointed to the departments of Civil and Chemical Engineering, she also developed a unique vision of interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach for the new Beaty Water Research Centre.

“Pascale’s work with the faculty has been transformational,” said Kevin Deluzio, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. “She has been a research leader within Queen’s Engineering, and a dedicated professor and mentor to her students. Her work with the Beaty Water Research Centre has made Queen’s a leader in cross-disciplinary water-related research and education she has helped solidify Queen’s reputation as a national authority in several engineering fields through her work with BWRC.”

Dr. Champagne was appointed director of this collaborative, interdisciplinary water and environmental research Centre in 2017.

Dr. Champagne has published more than 470 scientific articles. She has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in 2019 for developing, in collaboration with three researchers from other disciplines, a holistic approach for attaining a sustainable future.
