About Explore

Explore is run by the Department of Geography and Planning at Queen's University. Our goal is to show youth the wonders that our planet has to offer while at the same time educating and developing the practical skills and knowledge that will be a key asset for their further academic development. Explore offers two key programs: an educational summer camp and classroom workshops based on the Ontario curriculum.

Camp

Explore Camp has been running since 2006 and each year we continue to grow! We are proud to have launched into the realm of social media so that parents can be kept in the loop about what their kids are learning at camp. You can also check us out on Facebook or Twitter!

Workshops

Since our introduction in 2006 Explore Camp has expanded to instill a passion for geography in the classroom. Explore Camp has made it so that you don't have to go to us but we go to you! We offer a host of in-class workshops conducted by 5 counsellors and are proud to be servicing the general Kingston area schools in creating fun and engaging workshops for teachers and their students.

Assistant Counsellor Program

If you or someone you know is an enthusiastic, energetic high school student who loves kids and the outdoors, Explore wants you! The Assistant Counsellor Program is aimed at providing leadership opportunities for students entering grades 9-12. Through the AC Program, students can complete their 40 hours of community service requires under the Ontario High School Curriculum, plan programs, and learn teaching strategies and other leadership skills. Assistant Counsellors are expected to commit to one complete session (1 week) with the age group of their choice, but are more than welcome to volunteer for as many weeks as they would like!

*Please note: if you are entering grade 9, you may only volunteer with a junior group.

Special Needs Program

Explore is accessible to all children and youth regardless of ability or experience. Should your camper require additional care or assistance in the camp environment this summer, we can be available (upon request) to work with any camper with special needs. If this is the case, we ask that you sign your camper up for camp as early as possible so that we can accommodate their needs. If you have any questions about our Special Needs program, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Bursary Program

We want all children to have the chance to participate in our program, regardless of circumstances, so Explore offers financial assistance towards the cost of camp for families who cannot afford to pay for part of the camp fees. Please download the Explore Camp Bursary Application (pdf, 467kB), and submit it with your registration form. If you have any questions regarding the bursary program, please contact Kathy Hoover at hooverk@queensu.ca or 613-533-6000 ext. 77214.

Every child should have the chance to participate, let us help to make that happen.
